"Welcome to the new home page of Phil Harrison, bit boring at the moment but hopefully will get better and betterer (it's a word I tell you), that is if like thousands of other web pages it does not get abandoned". That is how I introduced the visitors to my site over 3 years ago, a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. I could not have forseen what the next 3 years would bring, healthwise I would get progressively worse. We would lose both my Mother-in-law, my Sister, a Great Aunt and an Uncle. I would be diagnosed as having Parkinson's, and more recently I would be diagnosed as having Coronary Heart Disease as well. What do they say, "It never rains, But it pours", well that is certainly mine and my wife's problem these last 3 years. There has been some good things happen in those last 3 years as well, I have retired early due to my ill health, what is good about that I hear you shout. Well for one thing, I have had more time to help various Charities, either with direct work or by raising money. Some of it has been via the Co-op Charity of the Year (who I used to work for), some of it by myself, or in some cases with my friend and colleague Terry Hamp. For a more in depth look at my life of the last few years, click on the following, Our Story. It takes you through how I met my wife Julie, and the heartache we have both endured the last few years.
Right how about something nice to read about, sounds good to me, something you can read while dunking biscuit after biscuit into a nice cup of tea, sound good, right here we go.
I have had a passion for a number of years, that has seen periods of intense concentration, No! not concentration, more of an obssesion. I am of course talking about scootering, the runs to the coast or countryside, on machines that were invented as cheap runabouts for the discerning Italian housewife of the 1940's. Although the engineering into the scooter has improved in leaps and bounds over the years, it is still essentially the same as the first scooters produced in the 40's. Scootering has always been in my life since I was about 18 years old, I was one of those youths in the late 70's and early 80's that enjoyed the MOD revival, following on from the film Quadrophenia. That in it's self was a follow on from The Who's rock opera of the same name, just click on the following SCOOTERING for a look into the scene, or on any of the rallies listed on the left of this page.
Be prepared for anything though, it was a heady time of rough and tumble, there were drugs, booze, late nights, drugs, more booze, sex, drugs, more booze and even blatant sex. None of which happened to me, well apart from the booze, and the late nights....any way read the scootering section to find out more.
Another passion I have come into in the last few years is Ice Hockey, and my favourite team is the Nottingham Panthers. I had watched some Ice hockey when I was a young guy, even did some skating myself, though not as a professional. Oh! I bought the Ice Hockey Boots and used to tear around the ice, but fame and glory were only in my head. No what I used to do was go to the local Ice Rink in Sutton in Ashfield, to the Disco on Ice. Once there I would race round the Ice like a maniac, and spray other less capable skaters with ice chips as I slid to a stop. Did I say I was mature, DID I, No I didn't. I was a right tearaway without a care in the world. Well about 4 years ago I went to see the Panthers at the National Ice Centre as part of a Co-ops Sports and Social club outing, this reignited my interest in Ice Hockey and have been going ever since. For two years I was a Season Ticket holder, but had to give that up due to lack of money coming in, it's very hard being a pensioner you know. Below is a few pictures that catch me, as.............well as me.
